Want to help?

We are looking for new citizen monitors again this year for our summer Lake Watch program. Please send us any contacts that you think would be interested, or forward this on to folks who might want to participate. citizen monitors in the Lake Watch Program are provided a Secchi disk, data sheets, training and more. No experience is necessary, all age groups are welcome although citizen monitors do need to be able to get out onto the lake safely (eg. Motor boat, canoe, kayak, etc.). We ask that they record secchi depths as many times as they can during a summer. We collect the data and put it into a report for the Utah Division of Water Quality Lakes Program. The data are extremely helpful in determining trends and general health of our lakes and reservoirs. This year we are also working this summer with the Division of Water Quality to monitor E.coli at high recreation lakes and reservoirs. We are recruiting citizen monitors to assist with this monitoring also. This would involve more training and more time, but could be a great experience for those interested in doing a little more. Again, the data is very helpful for the state to determine lake and beach closures if needed. Contact Laura Hines, laura.hines@usu.edu orr Nancy Mesner (nancy.mesner@usu.edu) 435-797-7541.
