Register now for the Box Elder County 2010 Working Ranch Horse Gathering. The gathering will be November 13, 2010. This year we are also having events on November 12th including a cobbler contest, the 4-H dinner, and a Ranch Rodeo. Come join in the festivities! The ranch rodeo will be for the young and old, so bring your friends and family! Registration is due by November 5th. All the Working Ranch Horse Gathering participants need to be registered 4-H members for the current year (starting Oct 1, 2010). However, youth will be competing in last year’s age divisions (grade as of Jan 2010).

Announcing the 4-H Eco Challenge Game from IBM! IBM has partnered with National 4-H Council to create the 4-H Eco Challenge!, an online interactive game for middle school and high school youth that teaches how daily choices impact the planet and guides young people on a journey to making a difference. This three-level game challenges users to test their knowledge of environmental issues by determining which actions are most eco-friendly for their home, neighborhood and community. Players will think critically about environmental issues including water use and quality, transportation, pollution and waste management.
As part of IBM’s TryScience initiative, the 4-H Eco Challenge! provides the experience and excitement of contemporary science and technology and is a great compliment to the learning stemming from your planned 4-H National Youth Science Day events and the 2010 National Science Experiment, 4-H20. The State 4-H Ambassadors & the Collegiate 4-H are excited to co-sponsors at statewide Teen Winter Retreat at Aspen Grove January 21-21. It is going to be super fun. Please advertise to all your teens in 10-12 grade. All the information is also available on the Utah4h.org website at http://utah4-h.org/htm/events-registration/teen-winter-retreat. Also attached is the application form and permission form.Come learn and practice how to follow your heart without losing your mind in this fun winter retreat! Dear Colleague:

I am delighted to report that 4-H again will have the opportunity to participate in The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and its annual search for our nation’s top youth volunteers. Last year, 137 county 4-H programs selected honorees in this prestigious youth recognition program, and 17 4-H’ers were among the 102 State Honorees for 2010. This recognition is extremely beneficial to 4-H’ers who have performed exemplary acts of service in their communities and to 4-H as a whole.

The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, recognizes individuals in grades 5-12 solely on the basis of their volunteer activities. 4-H’ers can apply online at http://spirit.prudential.com or ww.principals.org/spirit. Applications must be submitted to a county 4-H agent by November 1, 2010. Then, each county 4-H program can select one middle level Local Honoree for every 1,000 members (or portion thereof) in grades 5-8 and one high school Local Honoree for every 1,000 members in grades 9-12. Once county 4-H programs have selected Local Honorees, they must certify those applications by November 8, 2010 to a state-level judging committee, which will pick the top youth volunteers in each state and the District of Columbia.

All state-level honorees receive special recognition, while the top high school and middle level volunteer in each state and the District of Columbia receive silver medallions, $1,000 awards, and a fabulous trip to the nation’s capital for national recognition events. In Washington, a national selection committee (on which I serve) will name America’s top 10 youth volunteers for 2011. Each will win an additional $5,000, a gold medallion, a crystal trophy, and a $5,000 grant from The Prudential Foundation for a charitable nonprofit organization of his or her choice.

You can help by urging your county 4-H agents to nominate their 4-H’ers for the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards. Please review promotional material which they will receive, along with a press release being issued today. Feel free to use the release in your publications and encourage reporters you know to use the story. Additional information is available at http://spirit.prudential.com .
I have attended the national recognition events for The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards and I have seen first-hand the power of this program to reward and inspire young people. By participating, we can applaud the terrific volunteer work of 4-H’ers and highlight the emphasis that the 4-H community of young people across America places on community involvement. 2010-2011 Scheduled 4-H Activities
4-H Science Workshops: Every 4-H 2nd Saturday, trained 4-H’ers in grades 6-12 will lead science workshops for grades K-5; except April.

4-H Cooking Contests: During the week of March 7, 2011, 4-H Cooking contests will be held. The youth can choose to participate in Favorite Foods, Healthy Cuisine, and Chef Extraordinaire.

4-H Scholarship for education after high school is due in the office by April 1. This is open to all 4-H’ers in Sanpete County 4-H who have been in 4-H for at least one year. Forms are available online at www.extension.usu.edu/sanpete

4-H Talent Expo: April 9, 2011. All 4-H’ers no matter the projects may participate in Sanpete County 4-H Talent Expo in performances, fashion review and public speaking. Deadline

4-H Exhibits at Sanpete County Fair in August: 4-H’ers may enter their work and creations in the fair. Watch for special awards, like this year’s for the best chocolate chip cookie, the sweetest crocheted item. The still life exhibits are shown in the Exhibit Building, the animals are shown at the fair in the Livestock barn, and the horses are in the arena. There may still be the farmer’s market.

4-H Portfolios that are for the non-animal projects are due to the office September 15, 2011, so that the judging can be finalized by the 4-H Achievement and Recognition Night. 4-H Portfolios for Livestock projects are due at another date in September. 4-H Portfolios are a great way to keep a scrapbook.

4-H Above and Beyond Pin Award and Overall Achievement Award – application forms available on line under forms at www.4hsanpete.usu.edu and are due September 15, 2011. All 4-H’ers in the non-animal projects qualify. Recipients are recognized at 4-H Achievement and Recognition Night.

4-H Achievement & Recognition Awards, the last week of September, for the non-animal projects: The 4-H YLT youth run the program, giving out awards and recognition to the youth and adults. A celebratory meal is served to show appreciation. A silent auction that supports the 4-H Achievement & Recognition Awards event is held. The end-of-the-year recognition for the livestock and horses are held separately with dates to be announced.
